Nigel brings a lifetime of experience and dedication to the art of woodworking, underpinned by a profound respect for craftsmanship and design. Raised in a family of skilled amateur woodworkers, he was immersed from an early age in an environment where high-quality furniture, architectural joinery, and
even boats were crafted in household workshops. This formative exposure planted the seeds of a career defined by both creative ambition and technical excellence.
Nigel’s formally studied Art and Design in Melbourne during the mid-1970s, an education that broadened his artistic vision and fostered a
deep, enduring connection to the visual arts and creative practice.
He began his professional life in the photography industry, where he worked for eight years before making a decisive transition to full-time woodworking — a move that aligned his professional path with his lifelong passion.
Over the next 25 years, Nigel established and operated a successful studio practice, undertaking an extensive range of commissions that
spanned bespoke furniture, antique restoration, marine joinery, and complex composite construction. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to innovation, he consistently pushed the
boundaries of traditional woodworking, exploring new techniques and challenging design conventions.
Today, he continues to pursue his craft with the same curiosity and drive that have defined his career. As a judge for the Tasmanian Craft
Fair, Nigel brings not only a wealth of practical experience but also a deep understanding of the creative process and the values that underpin fine craftsmanship. His considered eye and broad perspective make him a respected voice in the field and a valued
